Stephanie listened to my concerns and showed the utmost empathy to me during this very stressful situation.
My mother was transferred from another facility to the stroke ICU at UofL Hospital following a new brain bleed that was discovered. I am a nurse - but more importantly, I am a daughter in this situation. Prior to the transfer to your facility, my mother had been at several other facilities. The communication between the facility and me (my mother's healthcare POA) was horrendous, to say the least. When I met Stephanie, I discussed my worry about my mother's health condition and the less-than-quality care she received at the other facilities. Stephanie immediately made me feel at ease. She spent one-on-one time with me to discuss the medical plan with my mother. She volunteered to be present when the neurologists visited - in case I had a difficult time understanding their foreign accent. She listened to my concerns and showed the utmost empathy to me during this very stressful situation. When she spent time with me, it was as if my concerns were the only thing she cared about. She neither made me feel rushed to communicate with her nor did she make me feel she had other things to do. She wanted me to feel comfortable and to trust the care that my mother would receive on the unit. She joyfully shared my mother's progress with me and demonstrated so much compassion to my mother and me. She was like a cheerleader for any progress my mother would make. As we all know, it is stressful having a loved one hospitalized, especially with an uncertain neurological condition. To have a nurse strive to develop rapport and trust with the family is not only comforting but shows the deepest of compassion. I felt totally comfortable and confident leaving my mother in Stephanie's hands. I knew her astute assessment skills would catch any new developments. I knew her care for my mother would shine through when I was absent. Being a nurse myself, I know what quality looks like at the bedside. Stephanie embodies all the traits that this prestigious award represents. She is a true DAISY Nurse.
