Although we felt alone and were far away from family and friends, she made us feel loved and cared for.
We completed a 10 night riverboat cruise on the Columbia/Snake Rivers in Oregon and Washington. We were docked in Clarkston and were to be transported by bus the next morning to Spokane to catch our flight back home to Florida. On Sunday evening and then again on Monday morning, B began experiencing clammy sweats, pain in his back and in his left arm down to his fingers. After checking in at the airport, B asked if someone could check his blood pressure. An EKG was done by EMT's, an ambulance was immediately called, and we were transported to Providence Spokane Heart Institute. He had total blockage of the main artery feeding the left ventricle and Dr. C inserted two stents. While on the 5th Floor Cara Unit, we received the best care. Since we had no luggage (it had gone on to Tampa) they provided us the basic toiletries. Stephanie Trautman made sure B had food/water - ordering her a sandwich for lunch and providing her with fruit cups etc. She also showed B how to find her way to the cafeteria and gift shop since it's a huge confusing hospital. They brought in a recliner so B could stay in the room with B and the next night brought in an unused gurney for her to sleep on. Although we felt alone and were far away from family and friends, she made us feel loved and cared for. Stephanie had been off work for 7 weeks caring for her husband who had been badly hurt in a house remodeling accident - she knew what it was like to need help. For two days Stephanie provided excellent care for B and genuine concern for B. The morning of B's discharge, Stephanie went over all of B's medications several times and made sure we understood everything. She also thoroughly went over a booklet explaining the things B might expect to experience in the coming days, answering any questions we had. In the meantime, we made reservations at a hotel that was right next to the hospital since we were to fly back to Florida on Friday. Stephanie informed us that she was going to walk us out when it was time to leave the hospital. (She only had two patients that day and the staff were helping to watch out for the other lady.) She grabbed B's backpack and took us down the elevator 5 floors to the parking garage level. B thought she would stop and tell us goodbye, but she kept going. She went down another elevator and across the parking lot to the street. We went up that street to another street where we needed to cross the road. After waiting for several cars to go by she said, "If the traffic doesn't clear pretty soon, I'm going to go out and stop traffic." Traffic finally cleared and we crossed - to a section of the sidewalk that went straight up a hill. After going about 30 yards she stopped us and told us to sit down on some concrete steps. She went to the top of the hill to see how much further it was to the entrance of the hotel. She came back and said, "It's too far and too steep - I'm going to go back and get my car keys, my cars not parked too far from here, and take you up to the hotel." After dropping us off at the hotel entrance the three of us hugged goodbye. B told her she was truly our angel - she said, "I had an angel when I needed one and I'm glad I'm yours." We felt like we were saying goodbye to family. We feel Stephanie should be recognized with The DAISY Award for her outstanding above and beyond care she gave us during our stay in Washington.
