I truly believe that Steph was meant to be a nurse and a caregiver. She has been with the YH Emergency Department for 7 years and every single time I see her, she has a smile on her face. She fits our Team Lead position well. The story I am going to tell is a perfect example of why she is a DAISY Nurse.
I was working a shift where Steph was Team Lead. I had a 16-year-old come in who had an intellectual disability. The local police department was called to her home to do a welfare check on her mother. When they arrived, they found her mother had passed away in the home and our patient was not aware because of her disability. She did not have any family in the area to care for her.
From the time our patient came in, Steph did everything she could to make her comfortable although the patient was hesitant and scared. Steph kindly asked her wonderful husband if he would be willing to bring in McDonald's so our patient could have warm, "kid-like" food. She contacted our house supervisor and they were able to get her new clothes and shoes. Our patient loved SpongeBob. Steph asked her husband if he could try finding a SpongeBob stuffed animal or something to make our patient feel safe and comforted. Although they were unable to find anything related to SpongeBob, Steph's daughter picked out a big pink unicorn that the patient adored. You could tell instantly that the patient felt special. She was smiling from ear to ear at Steph.
You could also see the joy in Steph's face that she was able to make such a difference when going through a terrible time. We were able to get our patient placement in foster care and as the social worker walked out to pull his car up, Steph and I got our patient dressed and ready to head to her new home. It ended with us 3 sitting on the bench outside of the emergency department, Steph was rubbing the patient's back and the patient was leaning her head on my shoulder as all 3 of us sang the SpongeBob SquarePants Theme Song. You could tell it weighed heavy on Steph's heart, but she didn't think twice about doing this for her. She has the heart of a servant and is willing to go above and beyond for anyone. She puts her heart and soul into being a nurse and it shows every single day. She is simply amazing.
