We are currently caring for a mother and her son who were involved in a devastating motor vehicle accident. Both patients are currently intubated and sedated, and have remained in our care for over a week. As they slowly began to emerge from sedation—still intubated but increasingly alert—our team recognized a powerful opportunity for healing beyond the physical.

In a remarkable act of curiosity and compassion, Stephanie Walters, one of our outstanding nurses and a dedicated patient care technician, asked themselves: What if these two could see each other again? What might that do for their recovery?

Rather than waiting for the right conditions to arise, they leaned into that curiosity and explored how to make a reunion possible—despite the significant clinical and logistical challenges.

Demonstrating unwavering commitment to patient-centered care, the team worked through the complex needs of both individuals. The mother needed to be safely mobilized into a chair despite being intubated, and the son was on strict neutropenic precautions, requiring an environment with minimal infection risk. Navigating these barriers was no small task, but it was met with clinical excellence and determination.

Through thoughtful communication and collaboration with multiple members of both care teams, they devised a creative and safe plan. They positioned the son’s bed to face the doorway, then gently wheeled his mother to the entrance of his room. The two locked eyes, waved, and exchanged smiles for the first time since the accident.

In that quiet moment, surrounded by beeping monitors and sterile walls, something profoundly human unfolded.

This act beautifully embodied the value of connection—not just between mother and son, but also between caregivers and patients. By recognizing the emotional needs of the people they serve, this nurse and technician demonstrated how healing comes in many forms. Their initiative didn’t just follow protocol—it followed empathy.

This story is a shining example of how our team lives out our core values daily: curiosity that drives innovation, commitment that overcomes obstacles, communication that unites disciplines, and connection that brings heart to healing.

Thank you, Stephanie, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
