Recently, Stephanie was assigned as a 1:1 sitter for a young mental health patient in the emergency department. The patient was understandably anxious and restless in the unfamiliar environment, and Stephanie quickly recognized that something more than medical care was needed to help calm and comfort them. With a nurturing spirit, Stephanie took the initiative to engage the patient in a way that not only met their emotional needs but also provided a sense of normalcy and connection. She sat with the patient playing cards, an activity that might seem simple but had a profound impact. Through this interaction, Stephanie created a safe space for the patient, allowing them to feel seen, heard, and valued during a very difficult time.
