We as a family, have many options for hospitals ED from which to choose. The nurse assigned to A was Stephen. He was professional, polite, and helped in engaging A as he cared for her. Stephen was able to get her to understand every procedure, as he patiently and respectfully explained everything from IVs, blood draws, and straight caths. In the last year, A has been seen in 4 EDs, had 2 inpatient hospitalizations, and 1 stay in rehab. To be able to start an IV on her frail, little 89-year-old body and veins never happens. Guess what? Stephen got in on the first try. I think the things that nearly made me fall off my chair is this: I have been a nurse for nearly 41 years. When Stephen told me he was a nurse for 7 months, I was shocked. His demeanor (I forgot to mention, my MIL usually doesn't want males to care for her) his skills, and his overall professionalism was that of a much more experienced nurse.
