Yesterday my son was admitted for a PICU overnight observation. It was a very stressful situation and being a fellow staff member of the Children’s Hospital did not make it less stressful. Stephen took the time to explain every detail to my husband and me but also spoke to me as a mother and not as a staff nurse. Stephen added some lightness to a very stressful situation and made sure that we knew every provider that entered the room. He also kept us in the loop every inch of the way for the plan of care, and the moment my son could eat, Stephen was in with a menu and how to order a meal. He also ensured that we were discharged the moment the paperwork was ready, which was highly appreciated since we were anxious to go home. Stephen also went above and beyond to ensure my husband and I were taken care of with water, coffee, and snacks. Stephen completed all of these tasks while also working in charge and taking care of the needs of other nurses and patients. I hope we never have to stay in the hospital again, but if we had to do it again, I would have Stephen take care of us any time.
