Steve acknowledges not only his patients but also their accompanying family members/support system. Steve does this effortlessly. It comes so naturally because that is who he is. He genuinely cares about people.
Steve Minor exemplifies the kind of nurse that the patients and families, as well as the Nurses, Physicians, and other members of the Interdisciplinary Team, recognize as an outstanding role model. Seeing the way Steve cares for patients, I am continually reminded of what it means to care for people as individuals and humans, rather than a diagnosis. Even on extremely busy clinic days, Steve consistently takes the extra minute out of his day to slow down and ask how his patients are doing. He acknowledges not only his patients but also their accompanying family members/support system. Steve does this effortlessly. It comes so naturally because that is who he is. He genuinely cares about people. We had a patient come into the clinic for pre-op teaching who was a minor and accompanied by a parent. Throughout the teaching, the parent asked all the questions, and Steve did an exceptional job of engaging the patient, too, by directly asking her, “What do you think about that?” or “How does that sound?” Steve created space for this patient to use her voice and be an advocate in her own care, which demonstrates exemplary patient-centered care. It is with these small gestures that patients may feel seen and heard, especially in times of vulnerability and discomfort that comes with navigating the healthcare system. Steve has been an invaluable resource for our clinic, especially during these challenging and dynamic times. Oftentimes, the coordination of patient care is complex and individualized and seldom is there a manual for how to address these specific needs. Steve has done an incredible job overcoming barriers to ensure that his patients are receiving the necessary care. He will contact other facilities, speak with multiple departments and work with providers to advocate for his patients. If a patient requires care closer to their home, Steve works diligently to ensure appropriate orders are placed, sent to the local facility, and resulted. The last part, following the test results, is critical to closing the loop and getting patients seen back in clinic for continued care. All the while, Steve is communicating with patients and providers to make certain that everyone is informed and has the same understanding of the plan. Steve provides excellent support to attendings, encouraging guidance to newer residents, and unwavering advocacy for his patients. Steve plays a critical role in our clinic and continues to go the extra mile for his patients daily. On top of being a great individual, Steve is an Extraordinary Nurse.
