Steve explained everything so clearly and he was very patient
I was so frightened to have an endoscope, from the moment I met Steve Szarvas-Jones and his team I felt I was put in safe hands. I didn't know Steve but his colleagues who admitted me highly spoke of him and reassured me I was in good hands whilst I was waiting which seemed like a lifetime.
When I entered the theatre I was petrified however I have never met such a funny, kind, and very patient nurse professional who listened to my worries, demonstrated empathy and understanding, and showed true professionalism, being calm and not rushed to get the procedure done. Steve explained everything so clearly and he was very patient.
Steve knew I worked for the trust, but I wasn't there because of that, I was there for a personal reason. I sat on the table very undecided about what I was going to do and I felt so reassured and so safe in his hands that I decided to go without sedation after my indecisiveness and Steve not once showed he wanted to rush me, and although unpleasant, I did it with his and the teams help.
Although he was ‘just doing his job’ and he probably does it every day, I believe that he does his job with pride and passion having to wear the special equipment for the procedure for what seems a long time and is probably uncomfortable.
I recognize Steve on that day for the way he goes above and beyond the care he provides for such a small amount of time in the theatre. Steve the Nurse Endoscopist really does demonstrate he loves his job and has a passion for it and he demonstrates the trust values.
Steve even came out to see if I was okay when I was in the recovery room which is to me, caring at its best and shows a genuine concern for his patient. If I was to ever have to go back for another procedure I would definitely be asking for Steve.
