August 2023 Honoree
Steven Drevlow, RN
During a shift as a charge nurse in the ED, Steven demonstrated powerful leadership skills, advocating for the most appropriate care for a critically ill patient. We had a very recent liver transplant patient present to us via EMS who we knew was going to require admission. The admitting transplant resident wanted to transfer the patient to an adjoining hospital's emergency department, which Steven knew would mean a significant delay in definitive care and an extended wait time in their ED. Steven immediately spoke with the attending ED physician, the resident ED physician, the patient's primary RN, and the transplant MD, explaining in great detail our other options for admission and why transfer to this other emergency department would be the least appropriate course for this patient. Because of Stevens's strong leadership and patient advocacy, we got this patient admitted directly to the appropriate transplant surgery unit at this adjoining facility, where he received the level of care that he required in only a couple of hours. Steven is an incredible RN, a fierce advocate for our veterans, and an amazing charge nurse. He's always able to find a silver lining.
Thank you, Steven, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
