Steve was able to assist this veteran to ensure that he made it home safely that day.
On a Monday in May, a dialysis patient was found outside by a VA employee. The patient was a bit lethargic and very worn out after his treatment. The VA employee called up to the dialysis unit and reached out to our charge nurse, Steven Florkey. Steve immediately went down to the VA entrance to check on the patient. The patient stated that he was fine when he left dialysis but was waiting on his transportation for almost 2 hours due to a traffic jam that the driver was stuck in. Steve immediately went to work for this veteran making sure that he was ok, but also trying to schedule alternative transportation home for him. Steve got the veteran stabilized and was able to reach the driver of his regular transportation. He was pulling in to pick the veteran up. Steve was able to assist this veteran to ensure that he made it home safely that day. After the veteran was safely loaded into the transportation van, Steve returned to the dialysis unit. He called the patient later that afternoon to check on him and make sure that he made it home safely. None of this was required of Steve, but because he provides excellent care and cares deeply for the Dialysis Veterans, he wanted to ensure that our patient was home safe and doing okay after treatment. The veteran was very grateful for Steve and that he cared enough to check on him even after he left for the day. This is the level of care that Steve provides for all of the patients in the Dialysis unit. He is an excellent nurse and is very deserving of this DAISY Award and recognition.
