I am an RN on the Oncology floor. One particular day during shift change, I had to call SICU for help on a chest tube. We don't get many chest tubes and this particular patient needed it changed STAT. Steven came up to help.
I happened to have a LOT going on. All five of my patients had a lot going on (2 of my patients were possible candidates to be sent to the unit.) I was overwhelmed and still in report on the phone with different doctors for all of my patients.
Without thinking twice, Steven took over for me. Not only did he take care of my patient with the chest tube, but he handled the needs of my patients that were in need of a close eye - getting vitals and such. He kept reporting to me and whispering, "What else can I do?" as I was on the phone with doctors. And he doesn't even work on my floor!
I was very grateful for his help and due to his extraordinary compassion for patient care, he deserves the DAISY Award.
