On Friday afternoon on April 18th, I was asked to discharge a patient who is profoundly deaf (without ability to read or write) to a subacute rehabilitation center. Under the law the patient is entitled to have an interpreter provided by the facility. The patient was discharged. I called numerous facilities but none could meet the patient's needs that Friday afternoon. After several calls a facility that was the family's choice stated that they could arrange for an interpreter to begin Monday. During these hours nurse, Steven Puchalski, with his calm manner, kindness and compassion continued to reassure the patient and family. I also benefited from nurse Puchalski's calm, supportive demeanor and greatly appreciated his help. It is my pleasure to work with and nominate nurse Steven Puchalski.
