For the past 3 days, Steve has worked carefully with a patient who is now essentially paralyzed and will need to go home with family who will be the sole caretakers. Steve has coordinated with therapy and other disciplines to provide education to the patient's wife who is Spanish speaking only. He has demonstrated patience as he has gotten to know the patient and family, and has identified what it is that they need to know most. It is difficult and time-consuming to teach all the nuances of caring for someone who cannot eat, cannot move, and can hardly communicate, but he has taken the time to do so. He has taken on this very unique need with grace and aplomb. It is comforting to know that this patient, a patient whom our team is concerned for to be able to go home safely, is being set up for a successful discharge because of Steve's willingness to take this challenge on.
