What does it mean to make a difference in someone else’s life? For the Street 1 nurses, it meant showing up day after day during the COVID-19 pandemic—under the harshest and most exhausting conditions—and still choosing compassion, teamwork, and excellence. Through multiple surges, supply shortages, policy changes, and personal sacrifice, the Street 1 nurses became the embodiment of BayCare’s Values: Trust, Respect, Dignity, Responsibility, and Excellence.
Despite the daunting task of donning and doffing gowns and PPE with each patient encounter and navigating staffing challenges, these nurses never wavered in their mission. They met patients where they were—physically, emotionally, and spiritually—listening not only with their ears but with their hearts. They celebrated patients’ birthdays, sang to help them feel special, and cried tears of both victory and loss. They made sure that every patient knew they were not alone.
Working collaboratively with ICU doctors, respiratory therapists, STAT nurses, and Care Coordination, the Street 1 nurses continuously developed creative solutions to provide the best possible care. They implemented proning for the most vulnerable patients to improve oxygenation, and they created a policy for walk tests before discharge to ensure oxygen could be ordered in time to prevent delays. They focused on moving patients to higher levels of care when necessary and ensured timely, safe discharges.
When visitation was restricted, these nurses implemented the use of iPads and FaceTime so families could see and speak with their loved ones—even if only to say goodbye. They brought patients close to windows so families could stand outside, offering comfort from a distance. When patients transitioned to hospice care, Street 1 nurses guided families every step of the way with tenderness, compassion, and grace.
They nourished patients physically with meals, emotionally with encouragement, and spiritually with presence. They carried out these acts not just once, but every single day. Each action was intentional. Each life was honored.
To single out one moment of heroism would be impossible because Street 1 nurses lived out these values with every patient, every shift. They exemplified what it truly means to make a difference in someone else’s life—and in doing so, they redefined the very heart of nursing.
