I nominate Sue Connell, RN, OCN from the cancer center for the DAISY Award. Sue is recognized not only by patients and families but also by physicians and other members of the healthcare team as an outstanding caregiver.
For the last 8 weeks, Sue worked extra (instead of 11-3pm; her normal hours - she worked 9-5:30pm - often staying even later) to precept a new RN to the cancer center. Being a specialty area; a 6-8 week orientation is the norm. Sue has precepted new staff before, and they always have such positive feedback regarding their experience. Sue has a positive attitude, patience, and is a team player. She leads by example; and continues to mentor well after orientation ends, offering continued support and encouragement to new staff. Sue clearly has the new staff member's best interest in mind as well as the departments. I cannot express what a difference it can make to a new hire to have such an outstanding preceptor; especially in a specialty area.
I would say Sue goes above and beyond everyday, making good things happen for patients, families, physicians and co-workers! You would never hear Sue say - that's not my job; she does it all.
If you truly want to recognize an extraordinary nurse for the super-human work she does everyday, I can't think of a better example than Sue Connell, RN, OCN.
