We would like to nominate Sue Raney for the Daisy Award for extraordinary nurses. Sue has been employed at this facility for 26 years. She is a very compassionate, caring, and skilled nurse. She has a special gift when it comes to working with patients that are mentally challenged. She has demonstrated her special skill on several occasions, but one particular incident stands out. Mark was a 47 years old Down syndrome patient scheduled for teeth extractions. Sue's brother had Down syndrome, so this patient was close to her heart. Mark's family had been very apprehensive about even trying to do the surgery. Mark was easily agitated and they didn't think he would even change his clothes, much less let Sue start an IV. Sue was able to comfort him and his family while preparing him for surgery. She used gentle words, great patience and was able to encourage Mark to allow her to do the necessary steps to get him ready for surgery. This is just one example of her remarkable kindness, patience and compassion she shows to her patients.
