One afternoon, a high risk pregnant patient called the OB Unit in tears, talking to RN - "it hit all of a sudden today, I don't want to get out of bed and take care of my one-year old". This patient was not only a high-risk pregnancy, but high-risk social situation as well, and unable to reach anyone for support.

Sue verified that the patient had someone to come pick up the one-year old so she would be safe and then obtained permission from the patient to contact Lifeways (Mental Health Organization) on her behalf, then did so. The RN also contacted the patient's OB provider and updated him on the patient's condition.

Sue verified that Lifeways could see the patient immediately the next morning, and that she would also be seen by the provider the next day and gave the patient emotional support and reassurance via the phone, gaining her promise that she would indeed follow up with her providers the next day.

Sue Rembowski demonstrated strong patient advocacy for a patient that wasn't at the hospital, actively living our Core Values of respect, social justice, compassion, care of the underserved, and excellence in caring!
