Sue is always positive, energetic and has a smile on her face. She is always thinking about patient care and what may be needed. On a recent night shift with an urgent c-section, we ended up in a disastrous anesthetic situation where the patient could neither be ventilated nor intubated and ultimately needed an emergent surgical airway. Sue kept her head throughout - calling for available anesthesia and surgical before she was asked, readying the crash and airway carts with no prompting so that everything was available even before we asked, getting nursing help, and generally helping in every possible way. The case ultimately produced a healthy mom and baby, and I credit her with being a huge help of getting our team to that outcome!
***
Sue demonstrated leadership skills, calm in the midst of extraordinary and complicated emergent c-section; acted quickly and directed all nurses and staff in next steps; immediately took action to assist other nurses and alerted hospital to put L&D on divert; gave support and guidance to patient's family and organized a debrief after the event. Excellent!
