July 2026 Honoree
Sun Whittington, BSN
I am honored to recognize my simulation (SIM) instructor with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurse Educators. She consistently exemplifies HCA’s mission, vision, and values through her dedication to student success, patient-centered care, and professional excellence.
She creates a learning environment that fosters learner development, socialization, and strong interpersonal communication. Throughout our six simulation labs, she gave us the lead while thoughtfully guiding us, allowing us to think critically, communicate effectively as a team, and build confidence in our clinical judgment. Her teaching style encouraged collaboration and helped us bridge classroom concepts into real clinical scenarios.
She models collaborative practice and serves as a true change agent by empowering students to take initiative while ensuring patient safety remains the priority. During a high-stress code simulation, she coached us calmly and reminded us to breathe; something as simple as that grounded us and allowed us to refocus and perform effectively. That moment demonstrated her awareness, leadership, and commitment to both our learning and well-being.
She is an expert resource who consistently demonstrated safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable, and patient-centered care in our mock SIM. More importantly, she instills those same values in her students. She creates and sustains a supportive mentoring environment that promotes growth, innovation, and continuous professional development.
Because of her guidance, I am a more confident, knowledgeable, and capable nursing student. She has truly made a lasting impact on my development as a future nurse, and I am grateful for the experience she provided.
