Suncha speaks to all patients to comfort them and let them know what she is doing, and her tone is always soft and kind.
I am writing to recognize Suncha Ham RN who had been a nurse in SICU at Ascension St. John for 35 years. This nurse is a DAISY Nurse for not just one specific story or situation, but for years of excellent compassionate care provided to patients and their families. I have known this nurse for almost 9 years and she is one of the best nurses I have ever had the pleasure to work with.
In the ICU our patients are often critical and Suncha never fails to provide patients and families with the compassion they deserve. She does whatever she can to make sure the patient is as comfortable as possible, even if that includes repositioning every 30 min. She speaks to all patients to comfort them and let them know what she is doing, and her tone is always soft and kind. The patient may be awake, deeply sedated, confused, or even a GCS of 3. You can always find Suncha talking to them, listening to them, helping them in whatever way she can. Her patients come first, you can always find her bathing, grooming, repositioning, etc. She does all the little things that many do not. The way she speaks and provides care to them is a constant reminder of why we do what we do. You could be having the worst day and walk by Suncha's room and if you just watch or listen for a moment you are instantly reminded of why we do what we do and just how important we truly are.
In the constant chaos that is the ICU, she is a rock and has never failed to show the compassion and kindness that all patients and families deserve. She is an excellent role model for how nurses should provide care. Words alone cannot describe just how awesome she is. Suncha is a true DAISY Nurse.
