Surgical Trauma ICU

My two-year-old had a tragic fall and suffered an injury they were not sure he would recover from, requiring immediate head surgery. Post-surgery, we were taken to STICU, and let me tell you about our experience. This has been nothing short of a blessing.
We are close friends with doctors and nurses at Logan Regional, where we are from. We know beyond a shadow of a doubt we would’ve been treated as family there, and this experience at CAMC General Hospital was exactly how we would’ve been treated there.
Night one, the night we were in a frenzy and didn’t know where to turn. We had the absolute pleasure of having Kenny as our nurse. From the beginning, Kenny kept us informed and let us see our little man before and after CT. He made sure all of our (village) were able to see our son post op, to give everyone peace of mind.
Since day one, Kenny has come back every single day at the start and end of his shift and multiple times throughout his shift to make sure we were taken care of. He brought our son a dinosaur stuffed animal that he refused to put down. Kenny was a source of comfort in such a stressful time for us.
Thursday night, Friday night, and as we understand tonight, we’ve had Alex. Thursday night, we were told Alex stood at the nurse’s station staring in our room to make sure our two-year-old was comfortable throughout the night. Anything we’ve needed, he made sure it was at our disposal.
Friday, we were blessed with Stephanie. From the moment we talked with her half awake, we felt as if she was family to us. She closed our curtain and gave us privacy with family and friends. She was busy with someone who was worse off than we were, but she still made sure we were taken care of in the midst of chaos. She came multiple times during this and made sure we were taken care of and let us know she hadn’t forgotten about us.
The last, Karla, or as we’ve called her today, “Nanny”. She has treated us like one of our own. She came to us halfway through today and asked, “Do you think he’d like to go outside and get some fresh air today?” Karla went out of her way to find a wagon and let us take our son outside and get some fresh air. She came in first thing this morning and emptied our trash, something she didn’t have to do.
All of the care we have received from these nurses has been more than we could’ve dreamed of. My “better half,” as we will call her, is a registered nurse herself at Logan, and she and I both agree that they have gone far beyond their call of caregiving, by leaps and bounds.
To say that we’ve been blessed with Kenny, Alex, Stephanie, and Karla is an understatement and truly doesn’t give them the credit they honestly deserve. Initially, they weren’t optimistic for a positive outcome for our son, but the extraordinary care they provided proved otherwise.
