Susan is an excellent resource to staff, mentoring her peers in developing knowledge and competence in caring for their patients. She demonstrates empathy and compassion for her patients and knows how to diffuse a patient's anxiety and bring them to a settled frame of mind. I actually witnessed this situation in action; the next day this same patient stating he received excellent care from her. I will never forget this patient and Susan.
Consulting and collaborating with physicians can, at times, be challenging to new staff. Susan acts as a resource in assisting them by keeping the patient and family-centered care principles center to the discussion. Susan uses, and encourages others, to use innovative approaches to facilitate work across different departments and units throughout HCMC bringing the best possible outcomes for HCMC patients.
