Sue sought permission and went to a nearby store to get the patient the tomato soup she requested, in the midst of an unexpected stormy weather.
We have been dealing with the effects of COVID-19 for the past 2 years. Frontline health personnel have endured and continue to experience many challenges. The resilience exhibited by many who have continued to work at TMH has been remarkable. Sue Campopiano, who is a Staff nurse on 3E, has mentored several new nurses on her unit. She has stepped in to help address some of the unit’s staffing challenges. One of my colleagues shared a story that revealed a level of empathy that is admirable. A patient on 3E who has a long-standing history of depression and PTSD was admitted with suicidal ideations. She was seen by the Psychiatry service and put on suicide precautions. This was at the onset of another surge in our cases of COVID-19, and its emotional toll on hospital staff was palpable. After 2 days of inpatient care on the hospitalist service, the patient was taken off suicide precautions and therefore offered a house regular diet. She refused to eat what was offered to her. Upon additional questioning, she stated that all she wanted to have was a can of tomato soup. This option was not available in the cafeteria and most people would have ended the interaction at this point. Sue sought permission and went to a nearby store to get the patient the tomato soup she requested, in the midst of an unexpected stormy weather. This act reportedly had an overwhelming positive effect on the patient. Psychiatric disorders have been exacerbated by this pandemic. Many of these patients need affection and attention. This demonstration of empathy and dedication at a time when Sue was facing staffing challenges on 3E is noteworthy. Susan, you are being recognized for the care, compassion, and expertise that you share with patients, colleagues, and peers. Thank you for your commitment to professional nursing.
