We had a pain patient come in for an injection, this specific patient having severe Cerebral Palsy was elated to have Susie stop and acknowledge him, speak directly to him, and the fact that he likes chocolate shakes. Susie went out of her way to go to the kitchen and provide that very thing for him. Often, patients like this young man can feel overlooked and just part of the system. Susie understands that the art of healing is more than an injection; it is relational, responsive, and acknowledges that people matter emotionally and physically. She exemplifies the highest level of being a caregiver and steward for her patients. I wish there were more Susies who care less about being on their phones and checking boxes and more about assessing their patients' needs.
