Sue had a patient of mine before me who was really struggling physically. The patient's family members had been very on the fence about how they were going to handle him if they wanted to make him comfort care. Sue advocated for this patient and explained to the family what exactly was going on and how we could make him more at peace. The family had a lot of guilt over making him a DNR/DNI, and Sue made sure to provide amazing family care by giving solid reassurance, which made them much more comfortable with their decision. The patient ended up being able to pass peacefully less than 24 hours later with minimal pain or agitation. Her knowledge and her extreme caring helped him and the family with this difficult process. The family will hopefully remember the care she gave and the reassurance she gave to help their family member have the most peaceful death he could.
