There was an issue with a veteran on the unit. The veteran was alert and oriented x 4. He had a compression fracture to his spine and had some bladder distention. The veteran was refusing to allow staff members to perform an in-and-out CATH on him. He became very combative, screaming at the top of his lungs and disturbing those around him. Many staff members made several attempts to explain to him the importance of relieving his bladder, but he still declined. Susan, acting as NOD for the day, sat and talked to the veteran for a while. After much communication and explanation, the veteran allowed Susan to place a Foley. He immediately felt relief. We were thankful for Susan’s ability to get through to the veteran and provide the care that he needed.
