After learning that my hospitalized sister was intellectually disabled and mostly nonverbal and how she communicated, Susan listened and attended to her needs with an almost laser focus. No problem or concern went unaddressed. She made my sister comfortable, and she trusted Susan immediately. Everything from IV lines to blood draws and information to doctors, speech therapists, PT, etc., was handled with efficient, empathetic professionalism. My sister had a 72-hour patch on her neck that had been removed somehow, and when I relayed it to the nurse on duty, her reply was that she could not get another because 72 hours had passed. When Susan came on duty, and I mentioned to her about the patch going missing, she contacted the doctor/pharmacy, and she had the patch within an hour or so. That was the simplest of several things that Susan was able to do for my sister. She was literally a “godsend.” Nurses like her are a rare breed. She deserves every accolade that’s due her.
