Susan engaged my mind which distracted me from my anxiety.
Nurse Susan was in charge of my care. I was particularly distressed by being in the hospital. The absence of my family, the pain of recovery, the unknown wondering if things were going to be okay, all had my mind swirling. I was not having a good evening. I have had quite a few surgeries in my life but this second day after surgery had me in a near panic.
Nurse Susan was the evening nurse. She assured me that after she completed her initial check-in with her assigned patients that she would return to gather a bit of history and assess my medical condition.
Nurse Susan came back as she said. It is difficult to explain, but her whole demeanor put me at ease. She was entirely professional yet personal. I'm an old man of 73 and retired Air Force. I tend to stuff my feelings and I believe Nurse Susan could see through my bravado. When she returned to get a short history from me, take vitals, and speak with me, I began to relax. We discussed my operation, my aftercare, and the importance of that care. In short, Nurse Susan engaged my mind which distracted me from my anxiety. She would probably say she was just doing her job, but I want you to know that her listening to me and genuinely being engaged was a blessing. After she left I fell asleep quickly and awoke the next morning feeling refreshed.
Please understand that I am not unfamiliar with stress, pain, or hospitals, and don't normally get so wound up by situations. That night I truly was blessed to have a professional nurse tend to me. I want you to know that this is the first time I have gone out of my way to write a nurse manager to applaud any nurse. Let Nurse Susan know that I am grateful for her being there that night and the next. The Lord brings people into our lives when we need them the most. I believe He was responsible for having Nurse Susan tend to me.
