I would like to nominate Susan Nelson for a DAISY Award for her compassionate and gentle care during my stay at Saddleback Memorial 3 West. Following the delivery of my son I went into septic shock and ended up in the ICU for nearly a week. I was discharged to 3 West from the ICU and Susan was my night nurse for four nights. Susan was attentive, compassionate, and creative in her efforts to make me comfortable, and so thoughtfully anticipated my needs. I had not had a good sleep in many days, and the first night that Susan took care of me, I was finally able to rest comfortably. I appreciated the way she synched my vitals and medication so I wouldn't be stirred awake multiple times a night. She went above and beyond to make my bed as comfortable as it could be and positioned so that I could get a good night's rest. On the evenings when I was extremely painful, she made sure I got the pain medications I needed to alleviate some of the pain, even when I was trying hard to avoid opioids. She made conversations easy; it was like talking with a caring friend when I needed one the most. Aside from her compassionate care, it was very clear to me that she is a skilled nurse who shows creative initiative. I'm still in the hospital and I still think of her. I will always fondly remember the comfort I felt in Susan's care and remain ever grateful to her.
