There was a patient in the ICU that was bleeding from the esophagus and stomach and not responding to traditional treatment.Dr. L. knew that unless he put a Blakemore tube down to pump (suction) the stomach of blood the patient would not survive. The issue for him was that he, as well as all of the GI doctors, rarely perform this procedure.Fortunately,Susan had recently either attended a seminar or worked with a rep on the placement of Blakemore tubes (he wasn't sure how but she knew how to do the procedure). She talked him through the entire bedside procedure in ICU. Dr. L. believes that her knowledge and calm demeanor saved this patient's life.
Sue deserves the highest honor a nurse can receive. She is extremely knowledgeable and continues to keep herself and her fellow co-workers on best practices for GI. Dr. L. cannot thank her enough for this. She lives the Franciscan valueseveryday.
