Susan's compassionate intervention was pivotal; without it, the patient's outcome could have been dire due to her limited understanding of the situation.
There was a critically ill patient on Susan's floor requiring surgery. Despite the initial refusal by the patient, who expressed a need to consult with family before proceeding, Susan felt it necessary to intervene quickly. She engaged the patient directly, stressing the procedure's urgency and offering to facilitate a discussion with her mother over the phone. Recognizing the patient's fear of being alone, Susan reassured her that she would remain by her side in lieu of her mother's presence. When the patient arrived at Pre-Op, I informed Susan; however, due to the patient being an unexpected addition, surgery was scheduled for late evening, around 9:00 PM. Despite her managerial responsibilities and busy schedule, Susan demonstrated extraordinary compassion by comforting the patient and remaining with her until late into the night. This act of selflessness was particularly significant, reflecting her dedication beyond her managerial role, akin to a nurturing presence in place of the patient's absent mother. Witnessing Susan's unwavering dedication filled me with pride as a nurse. Her actions exemplified profound love and compassion, setting a compelling example for her colleagues on the importance of clear communication and patient education. When I initially spoke with the patient, she appeared alert and oriented, yet somewhat challenged in grasping the gravity of her condition. Susan's compassionate intervention was pivotal; without it, the patient's outcome could have been dire due to her limited understanding of the situation. Susan's kindness, compassion, and willingness to go above and beyond saved this woman's life.
