Susan Smith is the first nurse we have had that has been nominated by 4 patients and their families! One patient said Susan made everything easier and more manageable, stepping in when her own family was not able to be there for her. Another patient said Susan made a huge difference in her life during her stay at HRH. She said that Susan really listened to her and helped remove her from a very stressful and emotional situation. One patient, who needed an emergency C-section, was comforted and given both educational and emotional support making her delivery as comforting as possible. Lastly, another patient commented on her being there to comfort the family when there was a problem with the baby; stating “She really cared; she helped keep my husband calm”.
Susan shared with the group, upon receiving her award, that she did not do this by herself, that everyone in her department deserved the award and that she was just doing her job. She is an evening shift nurse, and yet, her ceremony had one of the largest attending groups we have had since we started the award nearly 2 years ago, illustrating what we already know, that she is indeed, and the ideal DAISY Award Honoree.
