I was taking care of a very sick autistic patient who still believed in Santa Claus. I immediately reached out to the nurse I knew could make this happen. Within 10 minutes Sue had a Santa suit available to her on Christmas Eve. She found out from the patient's parents that B loved lights and music, plus he was a huge PSU fan. Sue went home and made him a Penn State fleece blanket in between all of her own holiday preparations, plus bought battery operated lights, jingle bells, window decals, and a Mp3player and loaded it with music. We had other nurses make paper chains and decorations for his room out of construction paper. Sue then recruited her own father to play Santa! On Christmas Eve her father showed up and surprised B with all the "gifts from Santa". When Santa came into the patient room, B's eyes lit up. Our Santa told B he had to make his first stop to see him and laid his hand across the patient's cheek. The patient snuggled his head into his hand and looked up at Santa with total awe. B was overjoyed and kept smiling all day! His parents were very appreciative and grateful for Santa's visit since B's sister was in the hospital as well. Unfortunately, B passed away a week later on New Year's Eve. His family sent a note letting us know they buried B with his Penn State blanket and thanked Sue for making his "last Christmas so special". Sue exemplifies the values of a DAISY Nurse every single day of her life.
