Susan Waller has been a Deaconess Nurse for many years. She continues to demonstrate the Deaconess spirit in everything that she does. Recently, a patient was admitted to her unit with a broken hip. The patient was scheduled to get married the following day. Susan was determined not to let a fractured hip keep this young man from his pending nuptials. Instead, she gathered her resources and planned a wedding ceremony in the Deaconess chapel. Family from all over the state and nation had traveled to attend the wedding, and because of Susan's quick thinking and above and beyond efforts, the family was able to attend and participate in the wedding. The happily married couple discharged a few days later. What a story they now have to tell!
Susan's willingness to step outside the box demonstrates compassion, empathy and she developed a special connection with a patient as well as multiple family members. She also arranged her day around the patient's schedule so she could be available to go to the chapel with the patient and continue to deliver excellent clinical care while he was getting married.
