Susan deserves recognition throughout all of Carilion for being one of the most kind, compassionate, empathetic nurses I have ever had the blessing of being a patient in their care. It was a trying night trying to get an IV to last. Susan and a male tech came in to find one. It came to the point of looking at my breast to search for a healthy vein. I knew I needed my medicine, so I just told them to do what they had to in order to get it. What they didn't know was that less than a year ago, I had been raped in my sleep, and now hate a man's hands on me. The gentleman tech was proper and as professional as possible, so as I was falling into a bit of flashback hysteria, I held myself together. I asked her to come back for a minute. At that point, I fell part. This amazing woman held my hand and let me cry. Feeling her anger and pain at my situation gave me understanding that it was ok that I had broken down. She did not judge me or try to speed away from me and onto another patient. She held tightly to my hand, just listened and let me cry. This woman is the epitome of love, empathy, gentleness. Through the night of flashbacks and pain, I could feel the warmth of her hand and hear her gentle voice telling me that I was a strong woman. This precious woman deserves the DAISY Award sevenfold and more. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to say what a wonderful nurse you have on staff, and what a blessing she is to all whose paths her life takes her.
