This nurse had a patient who was placed on end-of-life care. She remembered from her nurse residency classes that they have kits for fingerprinting for patients who are in comfort care. She instantly connected with the family. She mentioned to the family about the keepsake. They were very happy to hear we could do that. She went above and beyond to get the kit and she put her patient and their family first. Upon retrieval of the kit, she helped the family even though tears were flowing, she helped them find a little comfort with end of life. The family praised her and were so happy that she showed such compassion as she went out of her way to help them find comfort and a piece of their loved one forever. I believe she showed all the characteristics UPMC stands for. She maintained trust and confidence all while providing comfort in a very difficult situation. To take a moment that seems so sad and terrifying, she was able to make a little light of it and provide a memory to last a lifetime.
