Susie has the most compassion of any nurse I have ever met and she inspires me every day as to why I chose this as a career. Recently we had a patient expire in the ED and she went to phenomenal lengths to provide a quiet and tranquil environment for the family by offering beverages, tissues, crackers and played soft music in the room. Chairs were placed around the bedside and the lights were dimmed. She also made sure the patient was newly gowned and washed their hair before the family arrived to say goodbye to their loved one. When I witnessed all of this I made mention to her how in awe I was of her kindness and loving spirit to which she simply replied, "this is how it should be". Many times, in the ED personal touches, are difficult to maintain due to the nature of the department but this never seems to stop Susie from providing the most outstanding and compassionate care to her patients. She is truly an inspiration not only to myself personally but the department as well. She is always willing to stay late to help others and provides mentoring to those in need of guidance. My hope is one day to be as good of a nurse as Susie.
