Susie Lockrem is a true advocate for patients. During a recent encounter, Susie made a major impact on the life of an elderly patient and her family. This patient came to the hospital for outpatient surgery and Susie quickly realized that this patient required total care and was non-communicative. She learned that the patient's only caregiver was her elderly spouse who had to do everything for her, including lifting her. Susie couldn't believe that they had no other resources to help with her care and could not conceive of discharging this patient until this issue was addressed. Collaboration with the surgeon and clinical case management resulted in arrangements for physical therapy, occupational therapy, home health and social services. Sue was so happy that the patient AND family were going to receive the help they desperately needed. She told a fellow nurse, "This is why I am a nurse." Her commitment and compassion to this patient was recognized throughout the unit that day. Everyone was compelled by what she did.
