Sydnee Nichols is an exceptional nurse. Not only has she been extremely professional and knowledgeable in her care for my daughter, but she exemplifies what it looks like when compassion and love meet professionalism. She always wears a smile and carries herself with such grace. My daughter developed a rash that I assumed was just eczema. Sydnee also noticed a white film on her tongue. It turned out that she had oral thrush and also a fungal skin rash. My daughter's surgery is six days from now, so there is some concern that her surgery may be pushed back if we cannot get the rash under control, which has also spread to her chest area. The team involved dermatology, and some medication was ordered for my daughter's skin. Thankfully, it's on its way to clearing up! We are still praying that it is completely gone by surgery day, but had Sydnee not advocated for her, my daughter's rash might have gotten worse, thus postponing surgery. As the mother of a CHD baby, being in the hospital every day, 14 hours a day, is utterly exhausting. Not only did Sydnee suggest that I leave the unit to eat, take a walk, and grab some coffee while she watched my daughter, but she also took the time to pray for us. She could tell that I was emotionally distressed about my daughter's rash and her surgery possibly getting postponed, so she offered prayer. She led a beautiful, heartfelt prayer. Tears ran down my face, and I felt a calm at that moment that was truly needed. Sometimes nursing someone back to health isn't just about caring for the body physically; it's about caring for the body spiritually and emotionally as well. And although I am not her patient, she recognized the importance of my wellness in caring for my daughter. In our six months here, Sydnee has been the best nurse we have had.
