Sylvia is very compassionate, knowledgeable, and professional. I was a bit nervous after being called by one of her colleagues. This was the day after I met the surgeon and my cancer specialist nurse for the first time. I was overwhelmed with information as I had to field a number of calls from different specialist staff. When I met Sylvia she was very supportive. To start I was asked about my understanding of the surgical procedure. We went through the booklet and Sylvia referenced the illustrations to confirm the surgical technique. We discussed the post-operation diet and my dietary restrictions. I had worried that the weight loss caused by the disease and the initial post-operation dietary protocol would see me disappear to nothing. Sylvia was great at allaying my fears about getting enough calories and nutrition. We discussed the stoma and how to empty the bag. Sylvia checked that I fully understood as we went through the information step by step. She sited the stoma on my abdomen, discussed how to clean around it, and change the bag. She made a point of checking in on me post-operation. We discussed how the procedure went as she cleaned my abdomen and installed a larger bag. I witnessed her patient care as she checked on other patients around the ward. Sylvia is a true professional offering excellent patient care.
