I feel so lucky to be a part of this extraordinary team. The familial atmosphere for team members and patients is truly magical. We have a way of coming together for our patients. Many patients state the way we care for them makes them truly feel like members of our family, and we often reply with, "That's because you are." There are many instances that exemplify the phenomenal characteristics that make this group Team DAISY-worthy. However, one in particular demonstrates all the qualities and shows just how we shine in our patients' lives while they are in their darkest moments.

In this case, we had a woman come in during her pregnancy. She was absolutely terrified and unsure of what was going on. When she came to our unit she was in full panic mode, this of course made her condition worse. A few of us came in to settle her and try to help calm her; we placed supplemental oxygen on her and talked her through the panic. That was the start of a connection that only blossomed from there. She thanked us after calming down and told us how our all-hands-on-deck approach made her feel safe and that she could trust us with her life and that of her unborn child. Soon we learned some terrifying news. We worked night and day, nurses, care techs, and doctors to get her some comfort. We even had a brainstorming session to see what other relief we might be able to offer her.

After finding as much comfort as we could for her, we soon realized this was the calm before the storm came that we were going to get. They debated how to care for her and her unborn baby, they ended up coordinating a C-section. Finally, a perfect baby is born. To help alleviate as much stress as possible, we coordinated as much time as we could between mom and baby. This was an incredible task and took some serious teamwork. Our staff took turns, even when not assigned to her, to aid in her spending as much time with the baby as possible.

Finally, baby. We were able to work together to get her room set up so the baby could stay in mom's room. From a bassinet and diapers to formula and bottles. Her strength was truly inspiring and motivated us even more to help in any way we could. It was incredibly important for the patient to spend as much time with her baby and her family as possible. So, we worked to get permission for her husband and family to rotate and help her with the baby and if they were unavailable, we arranged for one of us to step in.

As long as I have worked here, I have never seen such an emotional case that pulled at all of our heartstrings. Watching her savor every minute with that baby. Listening to her fears of not being able to hold her baby or see her baby grow up. She felt she was missing so much but we had given her a piece of that back, that we helped her salvage her dignity and pull herself up to be strong for herself, her family, and most of all her baby. We have been so thankful to be a part of her story. As her difficult journey continues, our staff has continued to keep in touch as well as provide her with any help or resources she may need. We continue to keep her and her baby in our hearts and minds.
