The palliative team had a patient who was transitioned to hospice earlier in the day. This patient had uncontrolled symptoms and the family was distraught with his appearance. I called and spoke with Tabitha who kindly agreed to assess him for me. She spoke with the family and we worked together to control his pain and she kept an eye on him all night. She managed to take a situation that was extremely volatile and turn it into a peaceful ending for this patient. In the process, she helped regain the family's trust and they felt overall it was a very positive experience for them despite the loss of their loved one. I can't thank Tabitha enough for what she did. Unfortunately, in palliative medicine, we only have one chance to get things right and Tabitha made that happen.
