She took the time to listen empathically and was a great source of support in the immediate post-op period.
I am a physician who reversed roles and became a patient at the Magnolia ICU after a partial nephrectomy. As I was groggy and first opened my eyes after the surgery, I looked up and saw the friendly smile of my nurse for the next two days, Taiwo Hastrup. Taiwo was immediately reassuring and addressed my every need throughout the hospital course with the same smile she initially greeted me with. She took the time to listen empathically and was a great source of support in the immediate post-op period. Taiwo happily interacted with the multiple family members who passed through, who each individually noted her compassion and pleasant disposition. She turned an uncomfortable experience into one that will now be looked upon fondly. Taiwo's commitment to me mirrors the Ochsner core values of integrity and compassion and her Nigerian descent highlights Ochsner's focus on inclusivity. As a practicing hospital medicine physician in the area, I can only hope that all my patients can have their own Taiwo during their hospital stay.
