Tam's knowledge and command of treatment were thorough, diligent, and caring. She knew what was important to me and cared deeply that it remain in my life.
I came to Johns Hopkins broken in 2012. I had lost my right ankle due to blood clots, dealing with the severe impacts of Ulcerative Colitis, and a host of complications ensued. My back was in so much constant pain, I was out on disability at the age of 31.
I struggled to talk to doctors because they did not listen to my symptoms and struggles. Rarely were there answers to my problems. Then I met Tam. She proved to me that life was going to come back and did so with positivity and care that I had not seen before.
I had to get a colectomy/ileostomy, which had many complications along the way. At each visit, Tam listened to my details, researched them thoroughly, and helped provide details to the physicians. She even found a serious complication that required 12 days in the hospital, because she listened to my symptoms.
I went from being out on disability, believing I was getting closer to dying, to becoming a USA Hockey Team member, fighting for medals - all due to the correct measures she put in place.
Her knowledge and command of treatment were thorough, diligent, and caring. She knew what was important to me and cared deeply that it remain in my life. Over the course of eight years fighting this illness, she was the first to walk me step-by-step through all the recovery, all the stress, and continue to show patience when I grew frustrated.
Her positive attitude also enabled me to believe in myself again and led me to achieve many major accomplishments. I have been across the world, entered war zones, playing hockey against professionals, and I know without her work, that I would not be in this position today.
She even helped me share my story with others who suffer from UC, which has been therapeutic to my trauma. I believe that I can get through all hardship because she and my doctor enabled my good health and positive attitude. I love them both for believing in me, always telling me the cold, hard facts, working tirelessly to find answers to my problems, and giving me back my health.
I have lived in four states since I first met them and I will never see another doctor and nurse team for my treatment. Tam persevered with me - through three major surgeries, with two major complications, nerves that made it impossible to sleep - and she held my hand when my family was not close.
Tam is one-of-a-kind. Thank you for all you do, have done, and will do for your patients. You helped me find my life again.
