I was a patient recovering from ileostomy surgery. When I became aware of my surroundings, Tamara was talking to me in a very calm voice. I responded and did as she asked. Over a period of four days, she was there to care for me. My pain was so intense, but Tamara made sure I received my meds on time. During those first few days, I was in and out of sleep and fog. Tamara talked to me and could calm me down. I knew she had more patients, but she was always there for me. She talked to me like I was a human and not just a patient. She invested a lot of time and energy in me. I felt a connection of spirits. She gives from her heart. After the first few days, Tamara had two days off. Before she left, we talked about her family plans. She also said goodbye because I felt I would not be there when she returned. As luck had it, I was still in the hospital. Tamara was not my nurse. I could see her at the nurse's station and wondered why she was not taking care of me. When she came to and assured me that I was okay, she stated she needed a break from working with patients and was helping another RN. I accepted her remarks but wondered if I was a drain on her. I was pretty demanding at times. But then I thought how great it was that she and her company realized that caretakers needed a break.
