Her work not only improves the experience of patients and families but also uplifts the morale of staff who witness her dedication.
Tamika Johnson, RN, is a shining example of compassionate care and advocacy. On our Medical/Oncology unit, Tamika recognized a critical gap in support for family members who remain at the bedside of their loved ones for extended hospital stays. These caregivers often miss work, lack financial resources, and go without meals while supporting patients through difficult treatments like chemotherapy.
Through intentional rounding and empathetic listening, Tamika discovered that many family members were staying for days or weeks without access to food. She took it upon herself to find creative ways to support them—offering extra dietary trays, sharing snacks, and even providing coffee or soup with her own resources.
But Tamika didn’t stop there. She developed and submitted a grant proposal titled “Feed My Supportive Family"", which was successfully approved for $5,000.
This grant provides meal vouchers to family members who are unable to afford food or are physically unable to leave the patient’s bedside. Her thoughtful plan includes:
• Vouchers for 2 meals per day.
• Distribution managed by the charge nurse to ensure appropriate use.
• A focus on patient and family satisfaction, fall prevention, and stress reduction.
The impact of this grant has been profound for the families of oncology patients in her unit. Tamika often goes above and beyond—personally walking to the cafeteria to get meals for family members who are unable to travel the distance or who are unwilling to leave their loved one’s side. Her compassion extends beyond her own unit; when she provides chemotherapy to other units, she shares these meal vouchers with family members there as well, ensuring no one is overlooked.
Tamika’s initiative supports the People, Safety-Quality, Stewardship, and Service Excellence pillars. Her work not only improves the experience of patients and families but also uplifts the morale of staff who witness her dedication.
