I was admitted to OB for the induction of my first child. After finally getting some relief from my epidural I was ready for some much-needed rest before the real work began. Unfortunately, about two hours after receiving it I started to feel some intense pains all over again with intense pressure. I expected some pressure, but not the severe pain. This all began around 9:30 p.m., what followed was the longest agonizingly miserable night of my life. My nurse told me this could be normal and that where my pain was could be difficult to relieve with the epidural. After sitting through the labor of two of my sisters I just didn't expect this was normal. This night was my 3rd consecutive night of no sleep with terrible pains every three minutes. This all came with minimal progression of my labor once I hit 8cm dilation. Then around shift change the next morning my angel appeared in the form of my nurse, Tammy. She took one look at me in my pain and immediately called the anesthesiologist to evaluate me. Once he arrived they all worked together to get me some much-needed relief. While still not completely out of pain, just enough to finally relax enough to get to pushing, she stayed with me continuously motivating me to continue my efforts. After 3 hours of pushing my beautiful daughter made it safely into this world. I have never felt such genuine love and compassion from a complete stranger before. Her love for her job was so evident in her every action towards me. Her motivating words got me through something I was beginning to feel was impossible. My favorite phrase she used was "get mad and push her out!" I could not have done it without Tammy by my side. I don't believe I would have progressed enough for a natural birth if she hadn't taken action on my behalf in her first minutes during her shift. She was my angel! She went above and beyond for me and I will never forget her.
