Tammy was awesome. She is very reassuring and calmed my fears about my upcoming surgery.

Tammy assumed the care of a patient in SDS who had just completed a routine Interventional Radiology procedure. This patient had many comorbidities and the post op course was uneventful until just moments before the transportation team from Drake arrived. The patient called out and stated she was very Short of Breath.
Tammy sprang into action and immediately assessed the patient. She placed her on the monitor and noted her SPO2 was 97% but her heartrate was only 29. It is not uncommon to see low heart rates in SDS but how do you explain a normal O2 sat and the patient continuing to complain of SOB.
Tammy followed her gut instincts and called a rapid response. After evaluation by our Hospitalists, the patient was ordered to be taken to the Emergency Department. She was given a CT scan and it was discovered that she had not ONE but TWO pulmonary emboli's. She promptly received the necessary treatment.
Without Tammy's critical thinking skills and wealth of knowledge, the outcome could have been much worse. In the periop role the nurse does not have the luxury of extended time to get to know their patients as others may. These nurses must develop impactful relationships with their patients in a short period of time. Tammy received the patient and she expeditiously assessed the situation and responded as an extraordinary nurse.
Tammy has such a great attitude daily at work. She is always going above and beyond to do what is right for the patient and is an amazing team player.
