Tammy completed her tasks and documentation so she could take him downstairs for the Veterans Day festivities being held near the cafeteria and a trip outside to the garden.
Tammy is an exceptional nurse who displays the CIRCLES behavior standards daily. She always comes to the floor with a great attitude and consistently goes above and beyond for her patients. Recently, this nurse brought joy and smiles to a patient who has been on our unit for 55 days (about 2 months). He is confused and at 91-years-old there is no family or support system available to him. His wife is currently in a dementia facility, and he had not had any visitors during the entire hospital stay.

On this day, the patient did not seem like his cheerful, upbeat self. He is typically walking the unit and greeting everyone with his kind words and gentle behavior. He was talking about not having family and being in the hospital for so long and needing to get to the bank. Our patient is pleasantly confused and easily redirected. However, on this day something was off.

He happens to be a Navy Veteran, having served our country for many years, and today happened to be Veterans Day. Tammy completed her tasks and documentation so she could take him downstairs for the Veterans Day festivities being held near the cafeteria and a trip outside to the garden. She assisted in getting him dressed and put on his cowboy boots for their outing and off they went.

Approximately 30 minutes later they both arrived back to the unit, everyone gathered around him, as he was proudly wearing his American flag mask, the Patriots lapel pin, and holding his commemorative coin tightly in his hand. He was ecstatic as he showed his treasures to all of us. This kind and generous display of compassion by this nurse meant the world to our patient. He was so happy sharing stories and being around others who served our country, it brought tears to our eyes just seeing him so touched and appreciative.

As a nation, there is no one more deserving of our gratitude and respect than those who have served in the military which is why Veterans Day is so incredibly significant. He was also carrying a bag of goodies that was purchased for him by Tammy. All his favorite snack foods including a banana, cupcakes, and Reese's peanut butter cups.

Thank you to Parkland for having such a momentous event for those who served this country and we thank Tammy for being caring and compassionate on this day and every day. This is just one example of how she demonstrates excellence in all she does and how one small outing can make a world of difference to another person.
